President's plans to get Defence Ministry will lead to precarious situation: Mahanayaka Theras

by D. Oliver Silva and Asela Kuruluwansa

Sri Lanka will plunge into a precarious situation if the President plans to get the Defence Ministry under her control when the government is engaged in the process of achieving sustainable peace through winning international assistance, the two Mahanayaka Theras said yesterday.

In a special statement at the Malwatu Viharaya regarding President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's ideas of getting the Defence Ministry under her, the Most Venerable Rambukwelle Sri Vipassi Mahanayaka thera said that it is not a timely and wise decision for her to do so at this crucial moment. If any of her powers or privileges has been taken away by the Cabinet of Ministers she should have thought of it two years ago but not at this time. "The President's idea of taking all the powers under her is visible through this," the Mahanayaka Thera said.

"The government is taking all steps for the benefit of the country and the masses, with international assistance and the situation of the peace process is still unpredictable.

"Both parties are putting forward their proposals and therefore all should get together without creating trouble to prolong the peace process to achieve permanent peace to our country," the thera added. The Mahanayaka Thera proposed that a Professionals Board should be appointed to solve the problems erupting in the peace process, and stressed his wish to be a member in it.

"I don't have any intention of personal gain and I always act with the sole intention of the prosperity of the country and its people," the Mahanayaka thera said.

The Mahanayaka Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter the Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkhitha Mahanayaka Thera said the President and the government should act in cohabitation to solve the country's pressing problems.

No one should try to act according to ones own wish which would lead the country into much chaos, he said.

"When a decision is taken to a problem which cover the entirety of the country and its people, all leaders should unite to discuss a common decision through which we would he able to minimise the problems of the country."

"When there is a hope for the dawn of peace in the country, it is not a sound or wise decision for the President to think of taking the Defence Ministry under her control as it would badly effect the peace process and country and its people," the Maha Nayaka Thera said.
