Rotary felicitates three personalities for outstanding achievements The Rotary Club of Colombo East celebrated the Rotary's 'Vocational Service Month' by recognising three members of the community for outstanding achievements in their respective professions and the humanitarian services, they had rendered. At the regular meeting held on October 15, which was dedicated for the purpose, Director/Vocational Service Rtn. Rose-marie Fernandez conducted the proceedings. District Governor, Mel Assauw introduced an eminent teacher, Pius Fernando, who had been serving at St. Peter's College, Bambalapitiya, for over 50 years. It is a wonderful achievement to have served generation after generation as some of his students are currently holding high positions in society with Mel himself being an example. Assistant District Governor Dharshan John presented the award to Fernando. Rtn. Rose-marie, introduced the second recipient, Ms Pushpa Ramyani Soyza, a nurse working as a Training Co-ordinator for the Accident and Orthopaedic Service of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka. Her contribution to the fellow mankind has been outstanding both in terms of her profession as well as in terms of health education, being a regular contributor to the local media. Past President Dushan Soza presented the award to her. Club Secretary, Rtn. Tissa Gunasena introduced Daminda Jeevan Ranasinghe, a journalist and highlighted that Daminda's commitment towards humanitarian service had been exemplary as he had the courage to visit the war affected areas to write about innocent people affected by war. He has compiled all these articles into a volume under the title 'Bullet Wounds of the War'. Past President Sarath Perera presented the award to Daminda. |
