Innocent man held for 18 months in murder case by Asanga Warnakulasuriya A mix-up over the identity of a suspect led to an innocent man being incarcerated for over 18 months. Moragahahena Police searching for a double murder suspect, had arrested the wrong man and kept him in remand custody for over 18 months, Western Province South Special Crimes and Operations Unit revealed. The "accused" arrested for the double murder of a couple in March 2002 was in remand until yesterday, when the real culprits were finally nabbed by the Unit, OIC IP Asoka Gunesekara told the Daily News yesterday. The OIC said that they have found the "real" suspects together with the murder weapons hidden in a well. Three suspects were taken into custody. The special unit is investigating. |
