Premier leaves for London and US COLOMBO, Friday (AFP) Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe left here yesterday for Britain en route to the United States for talks with President George W. Bush, officials said. Wickremesinghe is stopping in London and will meet with Sri Lanka Muslim Congress leader Rauff Hakeem currently visiting Britain. The government's chief peace negotiator Prof. G. L. Peiris said the Prime Minister will hold discussions today with Hakeem on landmark peace proposals to be unveiled by the LTTE. Hakeem is in London studying devolution models as Sri Lanka prepares to develop a federal constitution to address Tamil demands for greater political autonomy without dividing island into two separate states. He will be in Washington from November 3 to 5, officials said adding that the White House meeting will be on November 4. "The President and the Prime Minister will review the status of the peace process in Sri Lanka, and discuss bilateral cooperation, as well as regional and international developments," the US embassy said in a statement. Wickremesinghe visited the White House in July last year before the government and the LTTE opened landmark face-to-face peace negotiations in September. |
