Travel go guide

For the Privileged few...

by Tharika Goonathilake

The luxury of a palm fringed private beach, a hammock to take in a good read with just the gentle breeze and the occasional sea gull for company, and most importantly, a hospitable staff to cater to your every indulgence, sounds like your kind of holiday to get-way-from it all? Then you must certainly be amongst the privileged.

And that is exactly what the family run Privilege, all-suite-boutique hotel, caters to. Serenity and sheer indulgence at its best.

Situated on the coast of Wadduwa, just 35 kilometres drive from Colombo, the upmarket boutique property, is one of the best kept secrets of the selective holidaymakers looking for a relaxing vacation retreat in secluded luxury.

The moment you enter, the tranquility of the place embraces you. The crisp white architecture, the soothing green of the palm trees, and the calming blue of the ocean sets the mood for an ideal holiday by the sea.

Venture inside and there's the first tell-tale signs of fine living. Antique pieces, cosy sit-down areas with classic teak furniture, soft lamps and beautiful work of art, all adding to the air of calm elegance, swept off by burnt orange and golden yellow accessories. There is a careful eye for detail and design that is apparent throughout the hotel, be it the hand-made bedroom furniture with Barefoot drapes in their sheer riot of colour, or the more intricate tiles that grace the swimming pool.

The suites come stocked with all modern amenities including three telephones, two televisions and MP3 VCD player, a dedicated fab/modem. So if you really need to make that business call or send in that all important report in between your sun and fun there's no problem.

And that's not all, state-of-the-art video conferencing and a cyber cafe also enables `connectivity' if you really must. If none of the above interest you, then give into sheer sloth and relax in your spacious suite replete with all creature comforts.

The hotel also has a well-stocked library, two restaurants serving gourmet delicacies and two bars. The `exclusive' bar provides an ideal place to relax with a drink after your day of sloth, whilst the pool bar is an ideal place to hang out for the sun worshippers.

One of Privilege's greatest attributes is the hand picked staff who ensure a truly personalised service. Be it an arrangement for an impromptu excursion with the kids, or putting together a snack to satisfy your sudden hunger pangs in the middle of the night, you only have to ask and it is there.

This brings us to the food. Given the hotel's no-buffet stand what is available is an extensive a la carte menu. But have no worries, you are spoilt for choice. Other facilities at Privilege include two swimming pools and a choice of indoor games such as billiards and table tennis.

The hotel's well-equipped gym will come in handy if you want to `shed the evidence' that is bound to appear after all the gourmet meals you partake.

If working out is not on your agenda, (afterall you are on a holiday) you can try your hand at a game of golf.

One thing that can be definitely recommended is the Ayurvedha spa, where a trained therapist kneads your worn out body and your energy, with some of Sri Lanka's tried and tested, age-old Ayurvedic `fixes' leaving you completely rejuvenated.

Come evening, suffice to say that the nightly-seven course dinner is a candle lit elaborate affair. Orchestrated by the hotel chefs and their teams, every course, from the starter to the dessert finale, is a celebration of good food and wine. Soft music from the titillating notes of a sitar and a grand piano, complements the gourmet experience, whilst creating an ambience of pure enchantment.

As the hotel's more popular regulars sum it up , "there's nothing like Privilege pampering to recharge your worn out batteries." And if you think, that it is one of the over-the-top recommendations one hears so often, try getting a room!
