Lankan Junior Soccerites off to Uzbekistan

The under 17 and 20 national soccer teams left the island yesterday to compete in the Asian Football Confederation Championship - 2004, qualifying matches in group 7 and 6 in Uzbekistan. The AFC Championship is scheduled to be held in Malaysia next year.

In these qualifying both Lankan teams are filled to play Uzbekistan and Bhutan. On 29th October Sri Lanka U-20 play Uzbekistan and meet Bhutan on 31, while Bhutan play Uzbeks on November 2 in group 6.

The U-17 team also play on the same day against Uzbeks in the morning and the second game for Lankan juniors will be on Oct. 31, also in the morning. All these matches are scheduled to be played at "JAR" Stadium Tashkent. The teams are expected to return to the island on Nov. 4.

The U-17 squad is managed by Sq. Ldr. Nandana Abeyratne and other officials are M. Zaheer (Asst. Coach), R. M. U. Mahindapala (Director - Youth Development) and R. Chandrasiri (Coach - Goal Keeping). Meanwhile the U-20 team will be accompanied by M. Mohamed (Manager), Sally Mohamed Fia (Asst. Coach), M. N. Pakeer Ally (Coach) as officials.
