Afro Asian Games gets underway Sarath Premathilake - reporting from Hyderabad HYDERABAD. Friday. The inaugural Afro Asian Games got underway here today with a colourful opening ceremony that lasted for two hours and with the participation of over three thousand sportsman and sportswoman. Despite the bad weather the Games commenced as scheduled with the women's hockey matches and followed by the preliminary round games of the soccer tournament. However the main athletic events will begin only on Tuesday. Sri Lanka will participate in the men's 4 X 400 metres relay with Sugath Tillekeratne, Mahesh Pushpakumara, Namal Bandara and Dimuth Perera doing the honours. In addition Asian championships silver medallist Sujeewa Nilmini and Anne Maheshi de Silva (javelin) will also compete. The events that will be worked off on Saturday are soccer, hockey, boxing, swimming and rifle shooting. |
