The economy with minus growth he inherited from the PA regime has already changed for the better registering over 5 per cent growth this year. The UNP led by him has the strength and capacity to usher in development and prosperity to the country. So said Nimal R. Pieris, UNP Chief Organiser for Maharagama and Former Colombo District MP at an awareness seminar for UNP Local Council members and cluster organisers held at the Maharagama Town Hall recently. The seminar was intended to re-organise party branch, youth and Lak Vanitha organisations and strengthen party activities in the electorate for the ensuing year. Mr. Pieris who explained in detail the party's future operations and strategies in the electorate said the massive aid package pledged by the donor community would be gainfully utilised by the government to develop every electorate in the country. Mr. Pieris said already more than Rs. 10 million had been allocated by the government for the development of the Maharagama electorate. The implementation of the proposed development projects would be handled by the respective divisional secretariats. However since actual implementation is done under his overall direction he would always give priority for projects which are considered vital for the people in the area. Already a 3 acre plot of land in Madiwela has been taken over for distribution among needy families or house building purposes. A 110 unit middle class housing scheme is also coming up behind the Pannipitiya garment factory premises. Administrative matters pertaining to the take over of a 6 acre plot of land at Veera Mawatha, Kelalgoda for distribution among low income families were now being finalised. The massive funds to be handed over to MPs and party organisers by the government in January next year would also be utilised to the full to cater to the public needs in the electorate. He said the Maharagama UC too has drawn up a massive development programme for next year and the cluster organisers should take effective measures to take this message to the public in their areas. Prime Minister's Co-ordinating Secretary Sunil R. Magammana, Provincial Council Member Almon Peiris and Chairman, Maharagama UC Chandrasena Masakorala were also present. |
