Over 98 countries vie for honours Sarath Premathillake reporting from Hyderabad Over 98 countries will be vying for honours in eight different disciplines at the inaugural Afro Asian Games which begins today in Hyderabad. The Games will be concluded on November 2 and the events that will be worked off are athletics, boxing, soccer, hockey, rifle shooting, swimming, tennis and weight lifting. However Sri Lanka will be competing only in the track and field events. Sri Lanka will participate in the men's 4 X 400 metres relay with Sugath Tillekeratne, Mahesh Pushpakumara, Namal Bandara and Dimuth Perera doing the honours. In addition Asian championships silver medallist Sujeewa Nilmini and Anne Maheshi de Silva (javelin) will also compete. The Sri Lankan team will be accompanied by the national coach Lakshman de Alwis with Kumarasiri Perera as the manager. |
