Twenty cricket from today

The inaugural invitation inter-schools knockout twenty cricket tournament organised by St. Joseph's College, Colombo will begin today at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium commencing at 9.00 a.m. The tournament will be continued during the weekend with the final schedule for Sunday under lights.

The teams participate in this tournament, are St. Joseph's College, Colombo, Royal College, Colombo, St. Sebastian's College, Moratuwa, St. Peter's College, Colombo, D. S. Senanayake College, Colombo, Lumbini College, Colombo, Isipatana College, Colombo, S. Thomas' College Mount. Lavinia, Thurstan College, Colombo, Dharmaraja College, Kandy, Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda and Jaffna School Cricket Association.

The competition promises non-stop entertainment for 20 overs a side with each match being completed in under three hours. Some of the features in this new tournament are the short boundaries, penalty runs for delays and the free hit for foot fault no balls. These new rules are specifically designed to keep the spectators on their toes from first ball to last.

Some of the group matches and the final will be played under lights in a carnival atmosphere and there will be a complete coverage on Rupavahini's channel eye on the last two days of the tournament. The winners of this tournament will receive a cash award of Rs. 100,000 and a valuable crystal trophy. The runners up will receive a cash award of Rs. 25,000 and a challenge cup.

In addition the man of the match and the man of the tournament will receive special cash awards. The chief guest for the opening ceremony will be Sri Lanka all rounder Chaminda Vaas. The chief guests for the final will be the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Johnston Fernando, vice president of Sri Lanka Cricket Aravinda de Silva and the Rector of St. Joseph's College Rev. Fr. Victor Silva.
