Men's Pro event reaches semi - final stage Sri Lanka's participation in the US$ 10,000 ITF Grand Slam Development Fund Men's Futures Championship was completed yesterday with both its doubles pairs bowing out. On Wednesday night, Rajiv Rajapakse and Renouk Wijemanne went down to the Japanese pair of Itoh and Sukuda, the latter winning 6/3, 4/6, 6/3. Yesterday, local schoolboys Franklin Emmanuel and Oshada Wijemanne suffered a straight set defeat at the hands of the Indian-Japanese combination of Somevdev and Motomura. Meanwhile, the semifinalists for singles were found yesterday. Jarsolav Pospisil of Czechoslovakia, the second seed, scored an impressive 6/4, 6/2 win over Fedi Widhiyanto of Indonesia and looked the favourite, following the exit of the top seed Japanese Tasuku Iwami in the first round. In another quarterfinal match, Sugiyama of Japan was lucky to win over Indonesian Prima Simpatiaji, who having won the first - set 7/5 was forced to retire at 1/3 due to an injury. The others to qualify for the semifinals were Korean Kim Yong and Czech Borgula. Play begins today at 10 am. |
