Curfew in Kinniya by Ranil Wijayapala and Trincomalee correspondent Police clamped an indefinite curfew in Kinniya in Trincomalee last afternoon as thousands of Muslims went on the rampage after damaging the houses of three MPs in the area following a protest over the seizure of their bullock carts allegedly by the LTTE. The tense situation in Kinniya was a result of thousands of Muslims who were protesting against seizing of their bullock carts allegedly by the LTTE, surrounded a three-wheeler which was transporting three Tamil civilians. Police and Army had to impose a curfew in the area to disperse the crowds and to intervene to secure the release of three Tamil civilians, later identified by one of them as a member of LTTE, as these protestors tried to manhandle them after taking the three-wheeler under their custody. According to the Police, despite the curfew imposed in the area around 1.45 pm thousands of Muslims went on the rampage protesting against the Muslim MPs in the area. The protestors have reportedly damaged the houses of Trincomalee district UNP MP M.A.M. Mahroof and Trincomalee district SLMC MPs Thideer Thowfeeque and M.S. Thowfeeque saying that there is no point in having MPs who do not look into their well-being. According to Police, the biggest damage has been done to MP Maharoof's residence as demonstrators stormed and ransacked his house. Military Spokesman Colonel Sumedha Perera told the Daily News that troops had to intervene to disperse the crowds and to get the three people released. A Police constable sustained minor injuries as demonstrators stoned the Police and Army personnel to protest their intervention. However, the situation in the area was brought under control by last evening and Police are patrolling the area while troops are on standby. |
