by Rashomi Silva

The establishment of the United Nations 58 years ago brought new hope to mankind to live in peace and to work towards the protection of human rights and a better standard of life with freedom said Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya delivering his United Nations Day statement yesterday on the occasion of 58th anniversary of the United Nations, a unique body established after the world war II to safeguard world peace.

Minister Jayasuriya said that Sri Lanka firmly believes in the relevance of the UNs role in maintenance of a peaceful world order.

"The need for multilateral approaches to address common problems of mankind has never been felt as it is today. Therefore we reaffirm the efficacy of multilateral approaches as means of achieving greater security and development for all."

Quoting UN General Secretary Kofi Annan's speech at the General Assembly last September, Jayasuriya said that the world has witnessed a very painful episodes since the last UN day 2002.

The Charter upon which the UN was founded upon are also valid to find solutions to the pressing global problems such as HIV/AIDS reducing the gap between the rich and the poor. The promotion of the rights and the dignity of mankind and facilitating developing nations to have better access to their share in the global economy while ensuring globilisation.

"Sri Lanka will be celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of its admission to the UN in 2005. The occasion would undoubtedly provide a unique opportunity for all Sri Lankans to educate themselves on the active role being played by Sri Lanka in the UN system and the United Nations' contribution towards the well being and progress of this nation," Minister said.
