News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | SLMC group to visit Britain, Ireland by Rashomi Silva The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Constitutional team led by Port, Shipping and Eastern Development Minister and Muslim Congress leader Rauff Hakeem will leave for Britain and Ireland on Friday to study Minority power sharing arrangements within a federal set-up there, the SLMC General Secretary Hasan Ali told the Daily News yesterday. The 12 man Constitutional Committee will study devolution models and exchange ideas with Constitutional affairs experts there. They are also expected to do a detailed study on the concept of the community police. "The SLMC has been vehemently supporting the establishment of the community police in the Eastern Province and especially in the Muslim majority areas," an SLMC spokesperson said. "The government has agreed to hand over the LTTE counter proposal on an Interim Administration for us to study and make our recommendations. We have our constitutional affairs team working round-the-clock studying the Federal set-ups and the minority power sharing arrangements around the world, " Ali said. According to the SLMC sources, the constitutional team is also due to travel to France to study the devolution models there and to see how those elements can be incorporated here. The constitutional committee comprises of General Secretary Ali, former Solicitor General Shibly Azeez, constitutional affairs expert Jayampathy Wickramaratne and several other legal and constitutional experts. In a recent Parliamentary debate all political parties represented in Parliament raised their voices supporting a separate Muslim representation when future talks centred on issues affecting the Muslim Community take place. |
