by Ranil Wijayapala and Bharatha Malawaraarachchi Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday defended certain remarks made by him at the 58th United Nations General Assembly saying that what he had focused was on "reforms" which are imperative to make the UN more effective and dynamic. "We are opposed to global terrorism and also war on Islam, the Premier told amids pin drop silence in Parliament at the tail-end of an adjournment debate centered on a motion presented by the JVP. In their motion the JVP condemned the Premier's speech saying it has brought disgrace upon the country by supporting the USA and its war on Iraq. "In my speech, I have responded to the issues raised by the UN General Secretary who stressed the necessity for reforms in the UN to make it a more effective," the Premier added. "My speech was not intended to cover the US invasion of Iraq. I took the Iraqi invasion by the US as an example to stress the necessity to have changes in the UN Security Council", the Premier added. Further stressing that the crux of his speech focused on the requisite reforms in the UN, Premier Wickremesinghe said he even did not go far as the Secretary General had gone in evaluating the UN's role, crisis there and explaining on reforms. " I know the value of the UN for a country like Sri Lanka and we want the UN to be more stronger, noted the Premier adding that in his speech he upheld the what Secretary General refered on reforms. The Premier said Sri Lanka did not go that far to express views on unilateralism considering the extent the Secrtary General did. |
