Pakistan complete easy win over South Africa

LAHORE, Pakistan, Tuesday (Reuters)

Pakistan took just 41 balls to complete their first home test win over South Africa on the fifth day of the first test on Tuesday.

Pakistan resumed on 137 for one, requiring 24 more runs. The victory took them 24 minutes, losing just one wicket to end on 164 for two and win by eight wickets, after they had made 401 in their first innings.

Shoaib Malik hit Graeme Smith for a boundary to mid-wicket for the winning runs. South Africa made 320 in their first innings, followed by 241.Pakistan lost Taufeeq Umar early on Tuesday after the opener completed a double in his comeback match following a knee injury that kept him out for six weeks.

He followed up his 111 in the first innings with a powerful 63 in the second off 114 balls with nine fours.

The left hander was unlucky to be dismissed by a ball from Paul Adams, who conceded 57 runs in 11 overs in Pakistan's second innings.

It is the first time Pakistan have defeated South Africa at home in four matches against the Proteas and overall their second win in 10 matches.

Their only win had come in 1998 in Durban when fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar took five wickets. For South Africa it was their second successive test defeat after their disappointing loss at the Oval to England in September that allowed England to draw the series 2-2.The foundation for Pakistan's victory was laid on the fourth day when Shoaib Akhtar and Danish Kaneria wrecked South Africa's batting.
