SDBV hockey champs for third year

Seetha Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy underlined their supremacy at girls hockey when they became champions for the third successive year at the girls under-15 hockey when they scored a hard fought 1 - 0 win over Pushapadana Girls College, Kandy in the finals played at Police grounds, Kandy on Sunday. At half time there was no scoring.

The finals produced pulsating hockey as both teams strived hard to win. The first half really belonged to the Pushpadana stickers as they were seen more on the offensive and missed two chances of scoring through penalty corners.

But in the second half Seetha Devi team changed their game plan and played some attacking hockey which paid dividends and they too missed as many as five chances of scoring.

Seetha Devi scored their winning goal three minutes from the end right inside Yamuna Wijesuriya pushed a penalty corner and centre forward Chathurika Wijesuriya collecting the ball dribbled past two players who had moved into defence and slammed a scorcher. Mohammed Hanafi and Anuruddha Herath umpired.

Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo clinched the third spot defeating St. Anthony's Girls College, Kandy 1-0 on penalty strokes after the match ended on a one all draw.

Visakha Vidyalaya scored in the 20th minute through Chamali Waduge while St. Anthony's Girls equalised through Madhushani Jayanetti.

In the semi finals Seetha Devi Balika Vidyalaya whipped Visakha Vidyalaya 3-1 after leading 3-0 at the breather.

Seetha Devi BV obtained their goals through Yamuna Wijesuriya, Chathurika Wijesuriya and Nelum Kumari.

For Visakha Manisha Rajakaruna scored.

In the other semi finals Pushpadana BV scored a narrow 1 - 0 win over St. Anthony's Girls College. Pushpadana obtained their winning goal in the 38th minute of play through M.N. Egodagedera.
