Royal bids their last farewell to GOM of rugby

Today at the Kanatte in Borella, Royal bid their last farewell to their Grand Old Man of Rugby Asoka Gunasekera (90) who played in the powerful team of 1932 led by S. A. Dissanayake.

His teammates in 1932 included well-known personalities such as Dr. H. S. R. Goonewardene, the Reverend D. K. Wilson and Pieter Keuneman.

After leaving Royal College he joined the Colombo Law College and played for the CR & FC. Throughout his distinguished career as a lawyer and later as a member of the Judiciary he was most interested in Rugby, especially Rugby at Royal College.

A much-respected member of the Rugby fraternity at Royal College he never missed the annual Old Royalists Rugby Dinner irrespective of which outstation he was posted as a District Judge. This year he was given a standing ovation when he was introduced as a ninety-year-old diner. It was indeed fitting that when his body was lowered into his grave the Royal College Rugby Team of 2003 sang the Royal College anthem "The School of our Fathers".
