Discussions on sea security in East by Ranil Wijayapala Defence Secretary Austin Fernando yesterday had another round of talks with the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission, Navy Commander and officials of the Peace Secretariat on detailed discussions on proposals for sea security in the East. "The discussions on the set of proposals on how the SLMM and Navy should operate with regard to sea security matters ended without any conclusion", Defence Secretary Austin Fernando told the Daily News last night. However, he declined to reveal the proposals subjected to their discussions since the proposals have not been finalised at this meeting. The Defence Ministry and the Navy has decided to prepare a new operational procedures in dealing with special circumstances following the allegation by the Navy Commander that the leak of information allegedly by the Scandinavian Truce Monitors had foiled a Navy operation to track down a suspected arms smuggling LTTE ship. Defence Minister Thilak Marapana on Monday had lengthy discussions with the SLMM in this regard and emphasised the necessity of having such operational procedures with regard to the security in the sea. Yesterday's meeting presided by the Defence Secretary was a follow up meeting in this regard and was attended by Navy Commander Vice Admiral Daya Sanadagiri, Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera and two representatives from the SLMM. |
