Hansard on Internet

by Our Parliament Correspondents

The Hansard which is the official version of Parliamentary proceedings of the Sri Lankan Parliament will shortly come on Internet allowing the general public to get a first-hand account on what is going on in the country's supreme legislation.

"It is now being worked out and very soon the public will be able to read the Hansard on Internet, Speaker Joseph Michael Perera told the media yesterday at the Parliamentary complex.

He noted that steps have been taken to provide the necessary training for the Hansard staff in this regard.

The Speaker said this was another step pursued by him to give the public a glimpse of Parliamentary activities and its responsibilities." We are also taking steps to give a live telecast but it is still under discussion." he added.

Speaker Joseph Michael Perera was speaking at a media briefing on the outcome of the two Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) and Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) conference held recently in Geneva, Switzerland and Dhaka Bangladesh.

The Speaker said these two conferences were successfully held and focused on a rage of issues with the aim of further strengthening Parliamentary democracy in member countries.

The IPU held in Geneva focused on three main topics namely the role of Parliament in assisting multi-lateral organisations in ensuring peace and security, global public goods and contribution of new information technology in the improvement of Parliamentary democracy.

The CPU conference in Dhaka was held under the theme of "partnership for global peace and prosperity."

The Speaker said a number of steps are now being taken to strengthen Parliamentary democracy in Sri Lanka." Already the Committee on Public Enterprises(COPE) and the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) are headed by the opposition members. Structural changes are being made to establish Oversight Committees to ensure a greater transparency of Ministry work and activities."

He said already, a sum of Rs. eight million has been allocated for e-Parliament in order to provide training for Parliament members and staff.
