Stamp for Pope

A commemorative stamp and a first day cover will be issued to mark the Silver Jubilee of the Pontificate of Pope John Paul II by Minister of Mass Communications Imithiaz Bakeer Markar today at 11 a.m. at the Ministry of Christian Affairs at No. 98, D. S. Senanayake Mawatha, Colombo 8.

Hill country readies for Deepavali

Brisk business in full swing in all townships around the hill country for the forthcoming Deepavali festival which falls on Friday.

All main roads in the hamlets are fully displayed with cloths and other finished wares, and thousands of customers with their festive moods are gathering for their last minute shopping spree, while the biggest sales were seen in the liquor shops in the plantation sector.

Permanent shop keepers in the bazaars said that their usual business was somewhat hit during this festive season, as a result of the items being openly sold on the roads.

Customers said that most of the Deepavali items were sold at exorbitant rates.

Patient falls to death in hospital

An indoor patient of Mapalagama, who was receiving treatment at Karapitiya hospital, Galle is reported to have succumbed to his injuries after falling from the second floor of the hospital.

It is not yet established whether the death was due to suicide.

The patient had been transferred to Karapitiya hospital from an ayurvedic hospital in the area, it was revealed.

Hospital authorities are conducting inquiries into the death.

Dinner dance

The Old Boys Association of St. Anthony's College, Wattala, will be holding their Antonian Nite 2003 dinner dance at the Ceylon Continental Hotel Colombo on October 25.
