Nuwara Eliya teas top auctions

by Kandy South group correspondent

With the Uva quality season coming to an end and tea prices from that region showing a decline Court Lodge Group, Nuwara Eliya topped the Ex-Estate tea prices and the prices for Nuwara Eliya region by selling a kilogramme of BOPF for Rs. 370 at the tea auctions held on October 15.

Forbes & Walkers Limited the brokers commented that the High Grown teas met with excellent demand and Western Broken Orange Pekoe Fannings (BOPF) continued to sell at remunerative prices.

The corresponding Broken Orange Pekoe's (BOP) too appreciated in price. The dearer trend for the BOP's could be attributed for the relatively smaller weight of the BOP's on offer.

With the price increase for the BOP's the price party vis-a-vis the BOPF's has now narrowed to a great extent. Nuwara Eliya teas continued its impressive run with the majority of the BOPF's selling at a price in excess of Rs. 340 per kilogramme which is good going indeed.

Unorthodox teas or CTC teas also saw an upward movement in price. An invoice of Pekoe Fannings 1 from Wanarajah Group Dickoya was sold for Rs. 192 per kilogramme and this price was closer to the all time record price of Rs. 195 per kg. for a High Grown CTC established by the same estate sold by Forbes & Walkers Ltd.

Nuwara Eliya teas dominated this Ex-Estate tea auction with Court Lodge Group selling a BOPF for Rs. 370 followed by a Rs. 365 by Pedro Group (Mahagastotte Mark) and this estate also topped the prices for BOP Rs. 250 and Pekoe Rs. 340 and all these lines of tea were sold by Forbes & Walkers Limited.

Kenilworth Group topped the prices for medium grown teas by selling a line of BOP for Rs. 270 and the other top prices for this region were Rs. 205 BOP by Dotel Oya Group and Pekoe Rs. 248 by Pettiagalla Estate.

Gouravilla Group dominated the Western High Grown by selling a BOP for Rs. 265 and BOPF Rs. 270 with Kirkoswald Group too obtaining the same price for the latter. The top price for pekoe was Rs. 335 by Kirkoswald Group.

Aislaby Estate, Bandarawela sold a BOP for Rs. 320 and Pekoe for Rs. 355 and Bandara Eliya Estate BOPF Rs. 265 which were the top prices for Uva.
