by Florence Wickramage Two elephants creating problems for Mahawa area farmers by raiding and damaging their crops for over two years have been translocated to the Wilpattu National Park, Wildlife Conservation Department Director General H.M.B.C. Herath told the Daily News yesterday. The Elephant Translocation programme suspended for over two years has been revived on Environment and Natural Resources Minister Rukman Senanayake's instructions. The two elephant have killed 10 villagers over the past few years. One elephant had been captured from the Kumbukwewa area in Baladagama in September and the other a month later from Rikillagollawa. The Department's veterinary surgeon Dr. Taraka Prasad tranquilised the elephants before translocation. |
