Parliamentary Affairs Minister A.H.M.Azwer has appealed to President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to put a halt to the PA political demonstration to be held on October 24, Friday - Deepavali Day. In his letter to the President, Minister Azwer states: "Western Province Governor Alavi Moulana has announced (Thinakaran page 1) that it is only Your Excellency who could stop the PA demonstration proposed to be held on Deepavali Day. If this statement is correct, may I take the liberty to kindly appeal to Your Excellency to issue instructions to stop this demonstration to be held on a day of profound religiously significant to the Tamil community the world over. This has been unanimously requested by all Tamil - Hindu organisations in the country. I hope this would be done in keeping with the sanctity attached to this festival, and, also to respect the religious feelings and susceptibilities of the Hindus." Meanwhile SLEP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena said the Janasena agitation campaign will go ahead as planned on October 24 and that while they respect the Deepavali festival as a significant day for Tamils, there was no way that festivities would be disrupted by the protest campaign. The General Secretary in a statement said the marchers would not use Galle Face Green for the protest and instructions have been given to the organisers about the entry points into the city. |
