LTTE to brief Tamil parties by Ranga Jayasuriya The LTTE will brief Tamil parties on its counter proposals in a series of planned meetings this week, but the proposals are unlikely to be amended following the meetings, an LTTE spokesman said. LTTE political chief Thamilselvam is expected to meet a delegation of Tamil National Alliance (TNA) representatives today in the first such meeting at the LTTE political headquarters, Kilinochchi. The TNA delegation comprises R. Sampanthan (TULF), Gajendra Kumar Ponnambalam and Appadurai Vinayagamoorthi (ACTC), Selvam Adekkalanathan (TELO) and Suresh Premachandran (EPRLF). "Thamilselvam will brief them on the counter-proposals and call for their support," LTTE spokesman Daya Master told the Daily News. He however ruled out the possibility of the counter proposals being amended, based on any possible suggestions made in such meetings. "It is only to brief them," Daya Master said. In another meeting the Upcountry People's Front leader P. Chandrasekaran and Radha Krishnan will meet Thamilselvam tomorrow. Ceylon Workers Congress leader Arumugam Thondaman and R. Sellasamy will meet the LTTE political chief on Saturday. The Tigers earlier said the other Tamil parties will be consulted in drafting the counter proposals. But the last few months saw the Tigers involved in extensive deliberations in the Wanni and abroad, which left little room for any negotiations with the non-LTTE Tamil parties. The LTTE mobilised Tamil constitutional experts in Paris and later in Dublin to work out counter proposals, but no members from the non-LTTE Tamil parties were included in the LTTE's 20 member constitutional team. The Tiger team engaged in an extensive campaign for support during their two week long tour to Ireland, Denmark and Norway. Tigers' Eastern military chief "Colonel" Karuna was quoted as warning the government that it will risk "severe international displeasure" if it rejects the LTTE's proposals. |
