India's hardworking middle class feels let down by politicians

NEW DELHI, Sunday (AFP) India's hard-working, educated middle class feels let down by politicians whom they see as corrupt, self-serving and intellectually deficient upstarts, Outlook magazine said Saturday in a survey.

Politicians were ranked just above black marketeers and pimps, when those polled were asked the question "Who is most useful to society ?"

Teachers, doctors and defence personnel topped the list with farmers, judges, journalists, computer engineers and social workers ranked in the middle of the list.

Seventy-five percent of those surveyed said that politicians do not live up to their expectations, and 53 percent felt that they were not good citizens and only join politics for selfish ends.

The present generation of politicians were also worse than their predecessors, according to a whopping 64 percent of people surveyed.Seventy-six percent said that the politicians were corrupt.

An overwhelming 95 percent said that they voted during elections as they believed their vote mattered, but they added that they favour candidates with good records rather than those from particular political parties.
