Johnston opens Kurunegala indoor nets

The two strip, Kurunegala indoor nets was opened on October 11 at the Welagedara Stadium by Johnston Fernando, Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs in the midst of a large gathering including representatives of Cricket Associations, students from the districts, officials from Sri Lanka Cricket and many other well-wishes. The Minister was welcomed by the Mayor of Kurunegala Nimal Chandrasiri Silva and Thilanga Sumathipala President, SLC.

This project which was completed at a cost of Rs. 7.5 million includes gym facilities as well. Built by the National Development Centre of Sri Lanka Cricket, the facility will now be managed by the Kurunegala District Cricket Association.

Two more facilities of indoor nets are scheduled to be opened next month at CCC and Ratnapura. Plans are also under way for two more similar projects to be implemented in Kandy and Gampaha.

The Indoor nets project of the NDC is yet another effort to develop the game in the outstations by providing greater facilities to both cricketers and coaches alike. Some of the indoor nets would also accommodate offices of the District Cricket Associations.
