Royal disqualified from schools hockey tourney by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy sports correspondent Royal College, Colombo, were disqualified from further participation from the all island schools under-15 boys hockey tournament now in progress in Kandy as four of their players did not have the identity cards. Vice President of the Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Association Rukshan Razak told the 'Daily News' that when the tournament commenced on Friday (October 17th) these four players did not have the identity cards. Normally players are not allowed to participate in the tournament without the identity cards but considering the fact that the team had travelled all the way from Colombo and an assurance given in writing by the representative of the school, they were permitted to play. Royal promised to produce the identity cards by 2.30 p.m. but failed. Even though Royal became Group C champions, they had to bow out of the tournament through default. They were held to a one all draw by Christ Church College, Matale in their last Group match played at Police grounds. Zahira College, Matale became the first school to enter the semi finals when they beat St. Sylvester's College 1-0. With 3 minutes to go for the long blast off a penalty corner. Ali Shamil obtained the deciding goal for the defending champions Zahira. Christ Church College also entered the semi finals St. Joseph College, Colombo 1-0 following a 'golden goal' after the match ended in a two all draw. The results of other Group match played yesterday were St. Sylvester beat St. Thomas', Gurutalwa 3-0, Maris Stella draw with Richmond 2-2, Royal drew with Christ Church, Matale 1-1, Dharmaraja draw with Richmond, St. Thomas, Gurutalawa beat Mahinda 2-0, Vijaya beat Wanduramba Central 2-0, Issipatana drew with Vijaya 0-0, Zahira Matale beat Maris Stella 3-0, Christ Church drew St. Sylvesters 0-0, St. Josephs beat Dharmaraja 1-0, Nalanda beat St. Thomas match 4-0, St. Aloysious College drew with St. Thomas, Matara 0-0. The matches will be continued today at 8 am. Kandy Schools dominated the All Island Schools under-15 hockey tournament when three schools from Kandy (Pushpadana BV, St. Anthony's BV, Seetha Devi BV) and Visakha Vidyalaya entered the semi-finals. The semi-final line up for today is defending champions Seetha Devi BV will meet last year's runners-up Visakha Vidyalaya and St. Anthony's BV will take on Pushpadana BV. Both matches will be played at Police Grounds, Kandy. |
