Weeraratne and Herath condemn Kenya to defeat NAIROBI, Sunday (AFP) Kaushaliya Weeraratne and Rangana Herath took three wickets apiece as Sri Lanka "A" beat Kenya by five wickets in the opening game of their five-match one-day international series at the Ruaraka sports club here Sunday. The pair tore through the Kenyan middle order as the hosts, who appeared rusty after a long lay-off were dismissed for a paltry 176 all out. After the home side had made a disastrous start with opener Kennedy Obuya returning to the pavilion after facing only one ball, the 24-year-old Weeraratne subsequently caught and bowled the Kenyan skipper Steve Tikolo (18) and Maurice Odumbe for four. Herath, who has played for the Sri Lanka senior team, followed this up by capturing Thomas Odoyo and Collins Obuya in similar fashion. Dharshana Gamage took two wickets while Gayan Wijekoon, the Sri Lankan top scorer with 41, who was flown here to replace the injured Arvinda Gunawardane, captured one wicket. Wijekoon, ably assisted by his captain Russel Arnold, appeared to be headed for his half century when he was caught at first slip by Ravindu Shah off the bowling of Tikolo. The two teams play their second one-day international match at the same venue on Monday. |
