Pradeepanjalee V on Saturday

A chance to explore new frontiers of music will be given to music lovers on Saturday October 25, 2003, when virtuoso sitarist Pradeep Ratnayake presents the fifth concert of the Pradeepanjalee series at the Lionel Wendt Theatre at 7.p.m.

Unorthodox combinations of instruments that fuse the East and the West, the hallmark of Ratnayake's music compositions, will again be showcased at this concert, as well as the Ragadhari tradition of music of which he is a disciple. Pradeep performs this time as part of the fifty year celebrations of the Lionel Wendt Theatre, while on holiday from his final year studies in a Masters in Music programme at Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan, India.

Pradeep Ratnayake

The compositions this time are Kuveni where the sitar and the cello played by Pradeep Ratnayake and Dushyanthi Perera will create magical and haunting music telling the story of the tragic princess and The Flight of the Hawk, where the power of the bird is captured in music when the sitar, cello and bass guitar combine in electric fusion.

Both these pieces are based on traditional Sri Lankan folk music, in keeping with Ratnayake's attempt of drawing inspiration from various traditions of music like Western classical, Jazz, Rock and folk music.

Traditional Sri Lankan drums and Indian percussion instruments will be played for both these pieces by Ravibandu Vidyapati and Chandralal Amarakoon. Alston Joechim will be on bass guitar. The spiritual Rag Yaman will open this evening of music.

Tickets for the concert are now available at the Lionel Wendt.
