Maldives ready for business -Ravi

by Ravi Ladduwahetty

Maldives has returned to normal in the aftermath of the September 20 prison riot and is ready for international trade, Commerce Minister Ravi Karunanayake told the Daily News last night.

The riot was a one off incident in the past and the backdrop is very conducive for business now. It is unfortunate that there are similar incidents in other parts of the world which do not get highlighted in the same manner. It is hoped that these unfortunate type of incidents will never recur, he said.

He said that Sri Lanka will have a major economic cooperation with the Maldives where there will be joint investments in tourism and the setting of semi-scale industries leading to the signing of a Free Trade Agreement between the two countries for which negotiations have begun, he said. It was the vision of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to have close economic and diplomatic ties between Sri Lanka's neighbours, he said.
