Following PM's directive to Minister :

Major drive to foster industrial harmony

by Ravi Ladduwahetty

The Government will shortly engage in a multi-pronged drive to foster industrial harmony through the creation of a forum for industrial facilitation, lifting ailing industries and the mediation in industrial disputes and the creation of employment opportunities.

This follows Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's directive to Industries Minister Rohitha Bogollagama last Friday to intervene in the settlement of all issues which are debilitating industrial ventures based in Sri Lanka which four million people are dependant for their livelihood.

The proposed programme includes the identification of the drawbacks in the sector, institutional drawbacks of the Ministries and other state agencies in relation to industries and drawing the cooperation of industrialists through the policy framework of the Government, Bogollagama told the Daily News yesterday.

He said that the Ministry of Industries will play the role of the one-stop-shop where all state agencies and line Ministries connected to the infrastructure development of the industrial sector will be brought under one roof in the Ministry where the provision of these facilities will be expedited.

The facilities provided to the Investment Promotion Zones will also be enhanced, he said.

The Minister will meet a core group comprising industrialists, officials of line ministries, trade chambers, banks, Industrial Development Board, the Board of Investment and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority at the Ministry auditorium on Wednesday afternoon to discuss some of the pressing issues in the sector.

The facilitation process also takes into account the revamping of closed industries and taking into consideration of the grievances of these ventures. "This facilitation process will take all the gamut of issues within the sector with vigour and the results will be seen within the next three months," he said.

Bogollagama said he could not understand critics who said that the Government and the Prime Minister did not understand the issues relating to the industrial sector and also those who alleged that the Government was providing incentives to the multinational companies at the expense of local industrialists.
