Curfew re-imposed in Kinniya

by Manjula Fernando

Police curfew was imposed from six last evening to six in the morning in Kinniya again to prevent further violence in the aftermath of Tamil and Muslim clashes over a land dispute on Wednesday.

Tension continued where attempts to construct a school on a disputed land by Muslims led some 400 families to flee the area out of fear of invasion.

Additional Police units were called in by Muttur Police to settle the situation. According to sources some 400 Tamil families of Alangkum have sought refuge in the neighbouring village of Eechenthivu. Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission organised meetings in the villages in a bid to calm down tensions.

Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Leader Minister Rauff Hakeem flew to Trincomalee the same evening to meet with security forces, the police top brass and local Muslim leaders to douse the tensions. He also addressed a rally in Kinniya urging an end to the clashes.
