PA wants SB at WTO meetings

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

The People's Alliance yesterday made a strong request to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to send a Minister like S.B. Dissanayake who will represent the farmers and speak on their behalf to the next talks of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) scheduled to be held in Geneva.

The PA urged the Prime Minister not to send the Commerce Minister to Geneva talks who has earned the contempt of the developing world and send someone else who will genuinely represent farmers like Minister S. B. Dissanayake, PA Media Spokesman Dr. Sarath Amunugama told the PA weekly media briefing yesterday.

Therefore the PA suggests that the composition of the Sri Lankan delegation to WTO talks in Geneva should be different, he said.

"We criticise the behaviour of the Minister of Commerce who attended the talks in Cancun. Even today there are demonstrations in Korea due to death of Lee Quan Hey a Korean farmer who used his own funds to go to Mexico and committed suicide protesting against the agricultural policies that the developed world was propounding there in Cancun," he said.

However, of the third world countries only Sri Lanka has supported this. The other countries have clearly said that the United States and the European Union are jointly subsidising their farmers to the tune of US dollars 300 billion per year, he said.

"We are very shocked that when all the representatives from developing countries protest against the developed world's policies and walked out, only the Sri Lankan Minister was seated there," Amunugama said.
