Four-storeyed vehicle park for Kandy

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy South Group Corr

A four-storyed vehicle park for Kandy funded by the Asian Development Bank and built at a cost of Rs. 580 million is under construction in an area little over an acre in extent in the heart of the Kandy town behind the Cargills Food City and along Sri Wickreme Rajasinghe Mawatha.

Minister of Central Region Development Tissa Attanayake who made an inspection tour to ascertain the progress of the work completed so far expressed satisfaction. Minister Attanayake said that a total of 890 cars could be parked at any given time. This will be a car park keeping up to international standards and will have all facilities. An interesting feature is that a new road will be constructed from this car park towards the Sri Dalada Maligawa to further ease the traffic congestion in Kandy town which led to the construction of this car park. At a discussion held with the building contractors of this car park, the Minister assured them if they encounter any problems, this should be brought to his notice without delay.

The work of this car park commenced in March this year and is expected to be completed by August next year. This vehicle park will largely help the Kandy Municipal Council to overcome the vehicle parking and congestion problem. The Kandy Municipal Council is also expected to prohibit the parking of vehicles on roads in the future.

Minister Attanayake in conclusion said that this project is one of the important ones undertaken under the Kandy town development plan. He also appreciated the work done by the Ministries of Housing, Plantation Industries and the Urban Development Authority to provide low cost houses for the people. "They are all working with a lot of dedication for the successful implementation of these projects," he said.
