Army Commander, Elections Chief to continue in office President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, in terms of Article 103 of the Constitution has re-appointed Dayananda Dissanayake as the Commissioner of Elections with effect from January 29, 2002. Dayananda Dissanayake who retired on reaching retirement age on January 28, 2002, has been informed by the Presidential Secretary to continue in service in the same post under section 27(2) of the 17th amendment to the Constitution. President Kumaratunga has also extended the services of Army Commander Lt General Lionel Balagalle till June 30, 2004. The extension has been given in terms of powers vested in the President under sections 29 and 155 of the Army Act. In addition to the functions of the Army Commander, General Balagalle has also been appointed as the Defence Chief of Staff of the Joint Operations Headquarters with immediate effect. This appointment has been made in terms of Regulations under Prevention of Terrorism (National Security Council) Act No.4 of 2001. |
