Youth killed in Rosmead Place bomb blast

by Asanga Warnakulasuriya

A youth was killed yesterday in a bomb explosion at Rosmead Place, close to the late Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike's residence.

Cinnamon Gardens Police said the bomb had gone off around 12.30 p.m. at one of the residences in the area.

Colombo Senior DIG Bodhi Liyanage told the Daily News that the explosion had taken place inside the room of the deceased Wasantha Kumar, who had worked as a servant in the house for more than one year.

The deceased was said to be a resident of Miriskanda, Ratnapura. Police suspect that a grenade which was being handled by the deceased had accidentally exploded. Further investigations were handed over to the Army to ascertain whether it was a grenade explosion, the DIG said.

The DIG also said that the Cinnamon Gardens Police are conducting a separate probe as to how Wasantha possessed a grenade.
