National Wetland Policy: Minister told to appear in Court by Florence Wickramage Appeal Court Judge Justice Shiranee Thilakawardena on Tuesday, ordered Environment and Natural Resources Minister Rukman Senanayake to make representations in Court on November 24 regarding the formulation of a National Wetland Policy. The Environmental Foundation Limited (EFL) has made an application to the Appeal Court to order the Minister to formulate a National Wetland Policy in the face of threats to nationally important wetland sites. One example cited was the recent illegal encroachment on 300 acres of the bio-diversity rich Muthurajawela Sanctuary, EFL's Attorney-at-Law Ravindranath Dabare told the Daily News yesterday. Dabare said that even though illegal encroachers had been evicted, some structures constructed permanently have not been removed. EFL in their petition has cited the Central Environment Authority, IGP T. E. Anandarajah and Minister Senanayake as the respondents. Dabare appeared for the petitioner while Deputy Solicitor General Bimba Tilakaratne appeared for the respondents. |
