Mercantile Rugby Sevens on October 18 and 19

Forty teams will take part in the Mercantile Rugby Sevens which will be worked off on October 18 and 19 at CR & FC Grounds and Royal College Grounds. This year, the tournament will be sponsored by Dialog GSM.

The President of the Mercantile Rugby Football Association Nishantha Wickramage speaking at a press briefing at the CR & FC pavilion on Wednesday thanked Dialog GSM for coming forward to sponsor this event. The MRFA is happy to be associated with Dialog GSM to promote rugby in the Mercantile Sector. The Mercantile Sevens has always provided rugby of a high standard and they can expect another exciting week-end of rugby on October 18 and 19.

The General Manager (Marketing and Sales) of Dialog GSM Nushad Perera said that his firm is happy to be associated with Mercantile Rugby Sevens this year. Dialog GSM strives to be a significant part of the sporting action of this country and improve the standard of sports. More youngsters are taking to rugby and Dialog GSM is already sponsoring two teams CR & FC and Army. They will continue to sponsor the Mercantile Sevens in the next few years.

The Secretary of the Mercantile Rugby Football Association Romesh de Livera said that already 30 teams have confirmed participation and 10 more teams are expected to do so by Friday and the draw will be held on October 13 (Monday). On the first day, the teams will be divided into eight groups and matches played on a league basis. This year, a new format has been introduced with the winners of the groups qualifying to play in the Cup and Plate Championships with the second and third placed teams playing in the Bowl and Shield Championship. Four new teams - Somervills, Asian Alliance, Brendix and TA Logistics are taking part in the tournament.

In the addition to the trophies for the winners and runners-up, two individual trophies will be presented. The Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament will be awarded the Mohan Daniel Memorial Trophy while the Player of the Final will receive the Pemraj Peiris Memorial Trophy.

Last year Hatton National Bank won the Cup Championship by beating Sampath Bank 21-14 in the final with Lakala Perera of HNB being adjudged Man of the Final and man of the Tournament.- (R.S.)
