Tharaka Madihahewa wins Taekwondo bronze medal by Wattala special correspondent - Joseph Pius Lance Corporal R. Tharaka Madihehewa of Sri Lanka Army won a Bronze Medal in minus 24kg Weight Division at the 15th World Military Taekwondo Championship which was held recently in Zagreb, Croatia. This is the first instance where a Defence Services Team won a medal in a World Military Championship and also the first World Medal for Sri Lanka in Taekwondo. In addition the Sri Lankan Army team received the Encouragement Award too. 22 countries including Sri Lanka, USA, China, Korea, Italy, Germany, Australia and Canada participated in the tournament in which the Korean Defence Services Team won the championship. Brigadier K.S. Fernando, Chairman Sri Lanka Defence Services Taekwondo Committee and Master Ki-Su-Lee, National and Army Taekwondo Coach participated in the championship as chief de Mission and head coach respectively. Warrat Officer-II, H.H. Premathilake, Staff Sergeant M. Ranjith, Corporal R.B.N. Ratnayake, Corporal H.J.S. Hewavitharana, Corporal H.M.K.G.D.K. Herath, Lance Corporal B.J.P. Gomas were the other members who represented the Sri Lanka Army in the team at the contest. |
