Cabinet endorses Tyronne's candidature for UN top post The Cabinet last night approved Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando's candidacy for the post of the UN Secretary General which will be vacant in 2007 when present Secretary General Kofi Annan's term ends. The proposal suggesting Fernando was presented by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. It was passed unanimously, Cabinet sources said. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister had ordered the immediate payment of salary arrears due to employees of the Peoplised Bus Companies. The Premier, having invited the attention of all Ministers to the long delay involving the problem of arrears, ordered the Treasury to release the funds. Adhikarana Sanganayake passes away The cremation of Ven Paraketuwelle Upatissa (Asgiriya Chapter) Adhikarana Sangha Nayaka Maha Thera of the Uda Bulthgama Ambagamu Korale, will take place at Sri Sudharshanarama Viharaya Bulathgama Ginigathene on Saturday at 2.30 p.m. The Nayaka Thera who was 90 was the Viharadhipathy of Bulathgama Sri Sudharshanaramaya and Alwatugoda Viharaya and the teacher monk to Ven Bulathgama Upananda Thera, Assistant Director of Education (Piriven) CPC, and several other bhikkhus. |
