Today is World Postal Day Today 9th is World Postal Day. The Universal Postal Union will celebrate World Postal Day in 189 member States in all parts of the world. With the commemoration of World Postal Day, under the guidance of the Ministry of Mass Communication, the Department of Posts implemented a special 'Communication Week' in Matale district and it will be implemented from October 1 to 8. Under this programme various postal, telecommunications and information technology projects were implemented in the Matale district. The total cost of these projects were Rs. 80 million. More than 50,000 people benefited from these projects. This Communication Week has been implemented in the Matale, Raththota and Laggala electorates. The postal Department has established two new Post Offices in Kaikawala and Palapathwala under this programme. The cost of these two projects is Rs. 100 million. Under the above development programme, upgrading of new Post Offices in the Matale district and the establishing of five new Communication Locales in Matale were implemented. With this Communication Week, the construction work of the new telephone exchange was implemented in Sigiriya at a cost of Rs. 100 million. Sri Lanka Telecom will complete this project within six months and will benefit 1,000 consumers. A special Information Technology Exhibition was held Christchurch College Matale under this Communication Week with more than 1000 students participating. The State Printing Corporation has established 20 Book Outlets in the Matale district and special Printing School was started at the Matale Divisional Secretariat Office under this programme. The closing ceremony of the Matale Communication Week will be held in Matale New Town Hall on October 9 with the celebrations of World Postal Day. Minister of Mass Communication, Imthiaz Bakeer Markar will be the Chief Guest at this function. Minister of Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government Alick Aluvihare and Members of Parliament in the Matale district will also participate. Religious activities will be held at the Aluvihare Temple at 7 a.m. on October 9. At 9 a.m. the commemorative session of the World Postal Day will begin at the Matale Town Hall premises. The winners of the World Postal Day Art and Essay Competition will receive their awards and certificates at this function. The Department of Posts has made a special arrangements to issue a stamp to commemorate the World Postal Day 2003. Minister Bakeer Markar will open the Kaikawala and Palapathawala Post Offices at 4 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. respectively. |
