Grant all facilities to Sripada pilgrims: GA

Maskeliya Group Correspondent

Pushpamali Udugampola, Government Agent for Nuwara-Eliya district addressing the Annual Conference held at Government Hospital auditorium at Maskeliya to find ways and means of granting facilities to Sripada Pilgrims for the coming year December 7th. 2003 to May, Vesak Poya 2004, said that since it was my first conference in my capacity as a Government Agent for Nuwara-Eliya district, I call upon everybody, every institution, every organisation, every department of the Government and NGOs to give their fullest co-operation in granting all fundamental facilities to Sripada pilgrims this year.

The GA Pushpamali Udugampola said that pilgrims to Sripada expected good sanitation, water supply, electricity supply, toilets, environmental cleanliness and security. They climb Sripada with a view of worshipping, God Saman. They should not be allowed to become non-worshippers with inadequate facilities. If they were not provided with basic and better facilities, they would have immense problems and they would not have peace of mind in their climb and worship. So, it is our duty to serve them with better facilities.

The Sripada Season starts on 7th of December this year and ends with May Poya next year. This festival season should be maintained well and made it suitable to pilgrims. There were complaints of Polythene bags thrown on to the road, and it should be prevented this year. The use of playing musical cassettes during the season should be prevented. A11 should jointly take action to prevent liquor consuming and liquor taking.

It has become a nuisance to everybody. Make the area as Noble and Pure for Pilgrims from Ginigathena to the top of Sripada.

She continued that a committee was appointed to make a chart of prices of food items that are to be sold to pilgrims at reasonable rates. It was pointed out by Ven. Seelananda Thera, a litre of Fanta was sold for Rs. 275 at the top of Sripada by traders during the last season.

Unauthorised structures should not be erected on the routes to Sripada. The RDA should give fullest co-operation to clear their routes for pilgrims and the Police is ready to extend their fullest co-operation in giving all facilities without any delay.

Garbage should not be mounted at or near Mohini Ella". Ven. Handapangoda Wimala, Chief Incumbent of Sripada said that when the Sripada Season was over last May, we took the Statues to Ratnapura. On the day we took it, it was raining very heavily and we were met with great danger of flood on the way.

Luckly that the GA too was saved from flood water. But up to the last day at Sripada, there was no rain at Sripada the statues were in safety. But while taking them only we felt many difficulties on the route to Ratnapura. This year, I call upon everyone to extend his or her services to the God-Saman and worship".
