CMC cleanup drive: Junk is bunk on Sunday by Tharika Goonathilake Everything that you want discarded, old furniture, utensils or even debris, come this Sunday, will be taken away by the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC). The occasion is CMC's 'Junk Day', a day set apart to help city dwellers get rid of their household and other unwanted trash, whilst facilitating CMC efforts for a cleaner and healthier city. All you have to do is to leave the items you wanted disposed, outside your homes by 9.30 am, Sunday October 12 and the CMC collectors will help you discard the junk. Call on or before Friday 5.30 p.m on 2693045 to give your home address to be marked on the special 'junk collection rounds.' You could also fax your request on 2674314 or email on [email protected]. According to CMC Solid Waste Management Division Director Lalith Wickremaratne, 50 trucks manned by CMC workers will collect the discarded items during the course of the day. "People tend to accumulate unwanted things over the years and then discard them in impromptu places resulting in overflowing garbage dumps. The Junk Day is a novel approach to facilitate proper collection and discharge," he said. The event, has also been organised to commemorate 'World Habitat Day' that was celebrated last week as part of CMC's continuous efforts to create a cleaner and better environment. |
