First local Aviation Academy opens by Rajmi Manatunga In a bid to upgrade Sri Lanka's aviation to compete with international services, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) yesterday established the country's first ever aviation training academy in Colombo. The Academy, set up in collaboration with the European Union (EU) is expected to provide training for every category of personnel in the local airline industry. CAA Chairman Shibly Aziz told the Daily News that the establishment of the training academy will change the present system of sending local airline personnel abroad in order to receive a proper training in aviation. "The academy will be modeled on the Singapore Aviation Academy and we have persuaded several international agencies including the aviation arm of the EU and the ICAO to have their training sessions for the South Asian region here. They have responded positively to our request," he said. Accordingly, the EU Asia Civil Aviation Cooperation Project will locate its South Asian office in Sri Lanka and have the bulk of its courses in Colombo. "The CAA is coordinating the programme and in addition will conduct its own training sessions. We may even have simulator training provided locally for those in the aviation industry in future," Aziz added. The Academy which will provide training for both local and foreign airline personnel is expected hold 12 training programmes in Colombo within the next nine months. |
