Waterpolo 'Battle of the Blues' on October 17

The 1st Leg of the 12th annual waterpolo encounter between S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia and Royal College, Colombo for the Dr. R.L. Hayman Trophy will be held on Friday 17th October, 2003 at 5.00 p.m. at the S. Thomas' College pool.

The return leg will be played on Monday 27th October, 2003 at 4:30 p.m. at the Royal College pool. The team with the highest aggregate score after both matches will receive the coveted trophy, which has been in the hands of the Thomians since its inception in 1992. Royal has registered two drawn encounters, one in 1999 and the other in 2001. In last year's encounter the Thomians were able to register their highest ever-aggregate score of 16 goals to 6.

The Thomian waterpolo team is fresh after a week tour of India, where they participated in a number of friendly matches with the Kerala State Waterpolo team. They also followed a four-day workshop with the Indian National coach.

In fact the Thomians have remained National Waterpolo Champions since 1998. S. Thomas' College made a clean sweep of all the local waterpolo tournaments in 2002 winning the Inter School Championships, the Novices Championships, the Junior Nationals, the annual Dr. R.L. Hayman Trophy for the Royal-Thomian encounter and the Nationals. S. Thomas' College has never surrendered the NAASU Junior Nationals Waterpolo Championships since its inception in 1994 and they have won more Inter Schools Waterpolo Titles than any other School.

Last year the Thomains under the captaincy of Wayne De Silva registered a record score in the second leg of Royal - Thomian waterpolo matches, scoring 11 goals to Royal's 3.

Both teams have practiced hard throughout the year and this encounter between the two premier waterpolo teams is expected to be an exciting one. However the Thominas have a definite edge over their archrivals. This season both teams met at the Junior National Championships and the experienced Thomian outfit led by fourth year coloursman Thanura Abeywardena emerged victorious comfortably.

Damith Rozairo will lead the Royal College waterpolo team. This year the Royalists were able to win the Novices Waterpolo Championships. The under-15 encounter for the RCUAC Challenge Shield will be played prior to the Dr. R.L. Hayman Trophy matches.

Thomian team: Thanura Abeywardena (capt), Rajiv Nagaraja, Lakshitha Kosgodage, Nishantha Fernando, Lasitha Perera, Dhanushka Saram, Dilshan Fernando, Dakshitha Thamanegama, Zafar Zainudeen. Dilhan Perera, Dhanushka Gunaratne, Chaminda Samaraweera, Ragitha Yasaratne. Coach: Nawaff Mubarak.

Royal team: Damith Rozairp (Capt), Maduranga Kulathilake, Nirosh Attanayake, Arshad Sathuk, Teshan de Silva, Supun Kulathilake, Zakwan Maffaz, S. Abeysinghe, H. Pathirana, P. Kariyawasam, T. Wickramasinghe, T. Muthukumarana, Teron Hendawitharana, Coach Mahinda Liyanage.
