Alleged JVPer who led robber gang caught

by Asanga Warnakulasuriya

An alleged Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) member who led a team of seven robbers into a leading garment factory in Ekala to rob sewing machines and other valuables was taken into custody by Jaela Police yesterday. The Police said that the suspect had contested last year's Pradeshiya Sabha election on the JVP ticket and had lost.

The suspect at the time of arrest had a court case against him for the alleged robbery of four machines from the same garment factory, Jaela OIC Crimes Inspector Nandalal Padmanad told the Daily News yesterday.

Acting upon a complaint made by the management, the Police surrounded the factory at around 2.30 a.m. yesterday and had found the suspects on top of the 40 foot roof, ready to enter the factory, Police said.

Jaela OIC Chief Inspector A. D. M. Herath is carrying out further investigations into the robbery.
