Support of minority parties vital - Hakeem

by Rashomi Silva

Port, Shipping and Eastern Development Minister and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress leader Rauff Hakeem said that the support of the minority political parties is vital for both major parties in forming a government as well as in maintaining its stability, under the proportionate polling system practised in the country.

"With the proportionate polling system, both major political parties will have to seek the assistance of minority political parties to form and maintain the stability of a government.

The other option is to form an alliance with the radical left party JVP which is an unlikely event, when one is reminded of the PA-JVP talks which failed. "The importance that the major political parties have placed with the SLMC was amply evident when both President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as the heads of the State attended the commemorative stamp release ceremony of late SLMC founder A.H.M. Ashraff." Spelling out the vision of the SLMC, he said that the party believes in Parliamentary democracy and takes the democratic path and not confrontation. The SLMC unlike some other political parties has not made the party a personal property of an elite family.

Hakeem said Ashraff was an experienced and a political leader par excellence. He served in the opposition for six years and was a co-leader of the PA government for another six years. During that tenure he cut an illustrious political figure in the Sri Lankan political arena.
