Power and Energy Ministry is now in the process of introducing fourteen more grid substations to the national grid to provide a quality electricity supply to the customers, said Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya when he made an inspection tour of the CEB's Veyangoda grid substation at Udugama last Monday. Constructed at a cost of Rs. 350 million this Veyangoda grid substation will meet the future demand for electricity in the area. This facility will also serve as an entry point for electricity generated at the proposed Norochcholai coal-fired power plant. Minister Jayasuriya said, this grid substation in Veyangoda is part of CEB's continuing efforts to expand and strengthen its transmission network and has been identified as an important growth centre. Additional General Manager (Transmission) CEB Ranjith Fonseka said the Veyangoda grid substation will meet the future demand for electricity in the Veyangoda area. Funding for this project was provided by the Asian Development Bank. The contract to construct this grid substation on turnkey basis was signed between CEB and Siemens Aktiengesellschaft of Germany in December 1998. The work on the substation was completed in September 2001. With the completion of the 220KV transmission line from Kotugoda grid substation, this installation was connected to the National Electricity Transmission Grid (NETG) and put in to commercial operation in September 2002. Additional General Manager (Transmission) Ranjith Fonseka, Deputy General Manager E. G. Abeyratna and high officials of the CEB accompanied the Minister. |
