Top long distance runners in action

Some of the top long distance runners including a number of promising schoolboys will be vying for honours at the Dinamina Lions marathon which will be held on Sunday, from Kattuwa, Kochchikade to Colombo.

The marathon is organised by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited and the Lions district 306 B, and sponsored by Mobitel.

The marathon will be conducted by the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Police.

This marathon which will be worked off with a distance of 42.195 kilo metres which is the Olympic Standard for an official marathon race will commence at 3.30 p.m from opposite St. Anne's Church Kattuwa, Kochchikade.

The marathon will be flagged off by the District Governor Dr. Rohan Perera (L/C Negombo), Speaker Joseph Michael Perera and MP Jeyaraj Fernandopulle who is the President L/C of Kochchikade.

The checking in, registration and the medical check-up will take place from 9.00 a.m. on Sunday at the marathon centre situated at Kattuwa, Kochchikade.

The route for the Marathon will be Negombo Town, Negombo Hospital, Katunayake, Seeduwa, Ja-Ela, Wattala, Peliyagoda Junction, Kelaniya Bridge, Thotalanga, Sugathadasa Stadium, Armour Street, Panchikawatte passing New Olympia Theatre, Maradana onto D.R. Wijewardena Mawatha and will finish in front of the Lake House.

Attractive cash awards will be presented to the first ten runners with the winner of the men's race receiving a cash award of Rs. 10,000 and a trophy.

The runner up will receive a cash award of Rs. 7500 and the third placed competitor will receive Rs. 5000.

The fourth placed competitor will receive Rs. 3000 and the fifth placed competitor will receive Rs. 2000.

In addition the 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and the tenth placed competitor will receive Rs.1000 each.

The winner of the women's race will receive a cash award of Rs. 5000, runner up Rs. 3000 and the third placed competitor will receive Rs. 2000.

There will be over 15 time keepers and 15 officials on duty, with a team of doctors and the members of the St. John's Brigade assisting.

The awards presentation will take place under the patronage of Nalin Ladduwahetti Chairman Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited.
